Course Description

This 13-hour LU/HSW course explores energy-efficient design and construction strategies for residential and small buildings, emphasizing their impact on occupant health, safety, and welfare. Participants examine core building-science principles, high-performance envelopes, whole-building system integration, and Energy Use Intensity (EUI) as a performance metric. The course reviews ENERGY STAR® and applicable Canadian energy-code pathways, along with practical strategies such as advanced framing, passive solar design, cool roofs, and low-energy housing approaches. Emphasis is placed on applied decision-making that improves thermal performance, indoor environmental quality, durability, and long-term building resilience.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

-Explain core building-science principles, including heat transfer, air movement, and moisture control, and their influence on occupant health, comfort, and building safety.

-Evaluate high-performance building envelope systems and construction techniques to improve thermal efficiency, moisture management, and long-term durability.

-Analyze whole-house system interactions between structural, mechanical, and envelope components to support safe, healthy, and energy-efficient building performance.

-Apply energy-efficiency standards, performance metrics (including EUI), and code-recognized pathways to inform responsible and compliant residential design decisions.

-Assess passive, active, and alternative low-energy design strategies to determine their suitability for specific climates, sites, and residential energy-performance goals.
