Course Description
This 6-hour LU/HSW course is designed specifically for architects and design professionals to strengthen the operational, financial, and strategic decision-making required to safely deliver buildings and protect public health, safety, and welfare. The course examines how firm-level management, financial controls, and risk-aware leadership directly affect the quality, safety, and compliance of architectural services throughout the design and construction process.
Participants will learn how to develop clear business vision, mission statements, and SMART goals that align with ethical architectural practice, regulatory compliance, and responsible stewardship of the built environment. The course emphasizes the application of key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial metrics to architectural practice, including staffing capacity, project resourcing, fee management, and cash flow—factors that directly influence the ability to perform adequate code analysis, coordination, quality control, and construction administration.
The course further addresses operational systems and management practices within architecture firms—such as project delivery structures, internal review processes, consultant coordination, and risk management protocols—that help prevent errors, omissions, and cost-driven shortcuts that could compromise life safety, building performance, and occupant welfare. Emphasis is placed on disciplined, ethical, and compliant business practices that support safe buildings, protect clients and employees, and uphold the architect’s duty to the public.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Develop a strategic practice framework—including vision, mission, values, and SMART goals—specifically tailored to architectural firms, to support ethical decision-making, regulatory compliance, and responsible delivery of safe, code-compliant buildings.
Apply key performance indicators and financial metrics relevant to architectural practice (such as project staffing ratios, fee utilization, and financial capacity) to evaluate organizational health and identify risks that may negatively impact design quality, construction oversight, and public safety.
Design and implement firm management systems and project delivery processes—including quality control, consultant coordination, and internal reviews—that improve accountability, reduce errors and omissions, and support workforce safety during design and construction phases.
Identify and mitigate operational and financial risks in architectural practice that could compromise building safety, accessibility, durability, and the health, safety, and welfare of occupants and the public.
