Course Description

This 18-hour LU/HSW course provides architects with an integrated understanding of residential construction and project delivery, emphasizing how decisions made throughout the construction life cycle influence health, safety, welfare, and overall project success. -Explain residential construction processes, zoning, and permitting requirements, and their impact on safe, code-compliant architectural design.

-Evaluate foundation systems, waterproofing strategies, and moisture-control methods to ensure structural durability and occupant health.

-Apply wood-frame construction principles, including floor, wall, and roof framing systems, to achieve structural integrity, energy efficiency, and design flexibility.

-Interpret residential construction drawings and specifications to support accurate coordination, risk reduction, and effective collaboration with project teams.

-Integrate building systems - including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and insulation - into residential designs to enhance safety, energy performance, and occupant comfort.

-Design building envelopes and circulation elements, including exterior finishes and stairs, that meet code requirements for durability, accessibility, and life safety.
